Vera Molnár Tribute
Vera Molnár, born in 1924 in Budapest, Hungary, and a pivotal figure in the Paris art scene, passed away at the age of 99. Her death was announced on Thursday by Paris's Centre Pompidou.
A pioneer in computer and generative art, Molnár's influential career spanned decades, beginning in the 1960s with her innovative use of algorithms and plotters. She significantly impacted digital and generative art, culminating in her latest project of creating NFTs for Sotheby's in 2023, which brought in $1.2 million.
Her work at the Sorbonne and her involvement in the Groupe de Recherche d’Art Visuel are landmark contributions to modernist abstraction and the digital art movement. Molnár, a female icon in a male-dominated field, not only influenced generations of artists but also paved the way for women in digital art.
Chosen Insight
“In spite of their advantages, computers, no more than other simpler tools, do not guarantee that a work of art of good quality will result, for it is an artist’s skill that is the decisive factor.”
